Ryan Cudworth is a historical non-fiction author based in Scotland who specialises in fourteenth‑century England, with a particular focus on outlawry, royal justice, and the shifting relationship between authority and resistance. His debut book, The Coterel Gang's Reign of Terror: Lawlessness in Fourteenth Century Derbyshire, explores the notorious Coterel Gang—one of the most enigmatic groups of outlaws active during the reign of Edward III—and is published by Pen & Sword under their True Crime imprint. Drawing on extensive archival research and original medieval records, his work re‑examines the Coterels’ rise, their criminal network, and their transition into royal service.

His research interests centre on the social and political pressures that produced outlaw bands in the Midlands, as well as the Crown’s pragmatic reliance on such figures during periods of conflict. He has contributed insights to online history forums, research networks, and specialist groups engaged in the study of medieval criminality, state power, and rebellion.

His work aims to bridge the gap between scholarly research and accessible storytelling, bringing neglected historical figures to life for a modern audience. Ryan is currently developing further projects exploring medieval resistance, royal pardons, and the blurred boundaries between lawbreakers and law enforcers.
